Windows Protected Print Mode: Is Your Print Environment Ready?
—
For years, enterprise printing has relied on the same basic infrastructure: print servers, manufacturer-specific drivers, locally configured queues, and IT teams troubleshooting why a printer works for one user but not another.
That model is beginning to change.
Windows Protected Print Mode, or WPP, is part of Microsoft’s move toward a more secure, modern printing architecture. Rather than relying on traditional third-party printer drivers, WPP uses the modern Windows print stack and IPP-based printing.
For IT teams, WPP is more than another Windows setting. It is a sign that legacy print infrastructure will become increasingly difficult to maintain as operating systems, endpoint hardware, and security requirements evolve.
The question is no longer simply, “How do we keep our print servers running?”
It is now: How do we build a print environment that is ready for WPP, IPP, ARM64 devices, secure print channels, and cloud-based management?
What Is Windows Protected Print Mode?
Windows Protected Print Mode is designed to improve print security and simplify driver management by moving Windows printing away from traditional third-party drivers.
In a conventional environment, printer drivers must be installed, tested, updated, packaged, and deployed across the organization. At scale, this creates both operational complexity and potential security exposure.
WPP instead emphasizes driverless printing through the modern Windows print stack. This makes IPP-compatible and Mopria-certified printers increasingly important.
When WPP is enabled, printers or workflows that depend on legacy drivers may no longer operate as expected. Organizations therefore need to understand which printers support modern protocols and which still depend on older software.
Why WPP Matters Now
WPP is arriving alongside several other major changes in enterprise IT:
Organizations are migrating from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
ARM64 Windows devices are becoming more common.
Apple Silicon Macs are now standard in many environments.
Cloud-based endpoint management is replacing traditional domain-based deployment.
Zero trust requirements are changing how organizations secure devices and network traffic.
Hybrid work has made location-dependent print infrastructure less practical.
Each change is manageable on its own. Together, they represent a major shift in print infrastructure.
Organizations that still rely on print servers, Group Policy mappings, third-party drivers, VPN-dependent printing, and manual printer setup may experience growing compatibility and support issues.
How WPP Changes Printer Drivers
WPP changes the role of manufacturer-specific print drivers.
Historically, these drivers enabled advanced printer features and handled communication between Windows and the device. However, they also created a significant management burden.
A WPP-ready environment instead uses IPP, or Internet Printing Protocol, to establish a more standardized connection between endpoints and printers. This can reduce the need to maintain a different driver package for every model.
Before moving toward WPP, IT teams should identify:
Printers that require third-party drivers
Printers that support IPP or are Mopria certified
Queues connected to legacy server-side drivers
Departments that rely on advanced finishing or tray features
Applications that require specific printer behavior
Business-critical printers that cannot tolerate downtime
This inventory helps prevent unexpected disruption during a Windows upgrade, device refresh, or WPP rollout.
Why WPP and Cloud Printing Belong Together
WPP and cloud print management address different parts of the same problem.
WPP reduces Windows’ dependency on legacy printer drivers. Cloud print management reduces the organization’s dependency on traditional on-premises print servers.
Together, they can help IT teams:
Centrally deploy and manage printers
Reduce driver and print server maintenance
Support Windows, Mac, and ARM64 endpoints
Improve printing for remote and distributed users
Strengthen security controls
Reduce manual setup and help desk requests
Modernize branch office infrastructure
IPP alone does not provide everything an enterprise needs. Organizations may still require authentication, secure release, reporting, access controls, certificate management, continuity planning, and support for specialized workflows.
That is where a complete cloud print management platform becomes important.
How PF360 Print Supports WPP Readiness
PF360 Print helps organizations modernize their print environment without requiring an immediate, all-or-nothing migration.
IPP Support
PF360 Print supports IPP printers for WPP-ready environments, helping organizations align with the modern Windows print stack and reduce their reliance on traditional drivers.
ARM64 Compatibility
PF360 Print supports ARM64 devices across cloud and on-premises deployments. This allows IT teams to introduce newer Windows hardware and Apple Silicon devices without creating a separate print management process.
Secure IPPS Certificate Management
IPPS provides an encrypted print channel, but certificates can become difficult to deploy and maintain at scale.
PF360 Print simplifies IPPS certificate management, helping organizations secure print communication without adding unnecessary administrative work.
Backup Printing
One of the most common concerns about cloud printing is what happens when internet connectivity is disrupted.
PF360 Print’s Backup Printer feature allows users to continue printing locally during an outage. This provides the centralized benefits of cloud management while preserving continuity for critical workflows.
Cloud and On-Premises Flexibility
Not every printer, office, or workflow can move to the cloud simultaneously.
PF360 Print supports cloud and on-premises deployments, allowing organizations to modernize in phases while maintaining support for specialized or location-specific requirements.
How to Prepare Without Disrupting Users
A WPP-readiness project should begin before printing problems reach production.
Start by documenting your printers, drivers, queues, servers, locations, endpoint types, and critical workflows. Identify high-risk printers, particularly those supporting healthcare, government, education, finance, shipping, or other time-sensitive operations.
Next, test IPP-based printing with a limited pilot group. Validate print quality, duplex settings, tray selection, finishing options, secure release, performance, and application-specific behavior.
From there, create a phased migration plan that identifies:
Which print servers can be retired first
Which offices or departments should migrate first
Which printers require replacement or reconfiguration
Which workflows need additional testing
Which security controls must be implemented
Where backup printing is required
Cloud printing should not introduce a new single point of failure. Critical departments should also have a documented and tested plan for maintaining local print access during connectivity interruptions.
Don’t Wait for Legacy Printing to Break
The worst time to modernize printing is after users can no longer print.
Windows Protected Print Mode is part of a broader transition toward standardized protocols, stronger security, modern endpoint compatibility, and cloud-based infrastructure.
Organizations that prepare now can reduce driver dependency, simplify printer management, strengthen print security, support newer devices, and retire legacy infrastructure gradually rather than reactively.
PF360 Print supports this transition with IPP printer compatibility, ARM64 support, IPPS certificate management, backup printing, and flexible cloud or on-premises deployment.
If your organization is planning a Windows 11 rollout, device refresh, print server replacement, or cloud modernization initiative, now is the time to assess whether your print environment is WPP-ready.
